The conference on biodiversity at international boundaries ended without an agreement
Two weeks of talks by UN member states to protect biodiversity across international borders ended without an agreement. If such an agreement can reach, the growing environmental and economic challenges will meet.
Conference President Rena Lee said, “We have come a long way, but we need more time and discussion to reach a final agreement.”
He also said that the entire session also approved the resumption of discussions in this regard at an unspecified time.
Notably, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which 196 countries have ratified, is an international legal framework for
“The conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.”
It has three main objectives:
- The conservation of biological diversity.
- The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and
- The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources
