The Great Reef is under critical threat due to climate change
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which is the world’s longest barrier reef, is in serious danger of disappearing due to climate change. The Great Barrier Reef was reef-bleaching or becoming white in color 5 times in the last 9 years due to warm.
Australian researchers found record-breaking heat in and around the Great Barrier Reef over the past decade, the highest in the past 400 years. This world’s natural wonder became in danger of its existence because of rising of temperature due to climate change.
Prof. Helen McGregor from the University of Wollongong in Australia is warning that the Great Barrier Reef is in danger, according to scientific data.
Scientists have been collecting reef’s samples for a long time. They also have been collecting the natural information around the Reef along with the reef growth information.
Reef ecosystems have the extraordinary ability to thrive and persist for many centuries. Reef is very important for the natural environment. Scientists in Australia are being collected information from thousands of Reefs.
Scientist Benjamin Hanly said, “The recent events of the Great Barrier Reef are very important. Unfortunately, the current situation of the Great Barrier Reef is very terrible.
Though there is a little hope. If we could work together and decrease the world warming, these Barrier Reefs will be alive.”
Reef is highly energetic within a specific range of temperatures. When the temperature is increased, then the reef’s color becomes change and the microalgae, the source of nutrients for the reef, is coming out of its bodies.
For this, when the temperature is rising the reef became white once a time. Scientist said the reefs under reef-bleaching can be back to their original position, but it must need decrease of temperature.
