Working to reduce visible waste to zero in Narayanganj district Town
On April 29, a meeting in Narayanganj District city aimed to create market connections between scrap dealers, recycling companies, and financial institutions to combat environmental pollution. The meeting took place at 11 am on Tuesday, April 29, at the Mandalpara Fire Service and Civil Defense office.
Mr. Asit Baran Biswas, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Waste Management for Ward 15, was the chief guest at the meeting.
Md Mainul Islam, an Urban Planner with the Narayanganj City Corporation, also shared his insights. The meeting was chaired by Md Firoz Alam, Project Manager of Cordaid, and moderated by Md Mostafa Zaman.
Cord Aid Senior Advisor Md Mahi Alam, UCBL Vice President Md Khorshed Alam, Fire Service and Civil Defense Senior Station Officer Md Shahjahan, Dhaka Bank Representative Md Shahriar Sajid, Replus Enterprise Proprietor Md Al Mamun, Ward 15 Secretary Md Abul Kalam, Cordaid employees, and waste traders and businessmen associated with recycling.
In his speech, chief guest Asit Baran Biswas stated, “I have been working for the past year to reduce visible waste to zero.” “In Hiroshima City, Japan, it is possible to sit and eat where waste is recycled. This has been possible because of their environment and system,” he added.
I think it is very important for waste traders to form an association or society very soon. This association can address various issues like cash shortages, bank loan difficulties, harassment when purchasing goods, mistreatment from local authorities, space issues, and trade license challenges.
He expressed his opinion on opening a help desk on behalf of the City Corporation. He mentioned recycling businessman Bablu Mia said that he purchases 120 tons of plastic for recycling per month.
He continued and said, “Other entrepreneurs are making purchases as well. So, if plastic is not collected from the city for 1 week, then you can imagine what will happen to the city. Therefore, NCC has to play an important role in strengthening the supply chain of plastic waste.”
Asit Baran Biswas thanked Cordaid and Bhangari businessmen for their efforts to reduce environmental pollution and improve livability in the city. The Fire Service provided firefighting training on using fire extinguishers in factories to everyone present.
