World Environment Day 2025
June 5, 2025, World Environment Day 2025.
This day is the largest international day of the environment. It is celebrated by the United Nations every year on June 5, bringing together millions of people around the world. It aims to create sustainable change in governments, businesses, and individuals to protect and restore our planet, Earth.
Since 1973, World Environment Day, organized by the UNEP, has inspired people in over 150 countries to tackle major environmental challenges.
Nowadays, plastic pollution has spread to every corner of the planet—even entering our bodies in the form of microplastics. World Environment Day 2025 calls for collective action to combat plastic pollution.
By drawing inspiration from nature and showcasing real-world solutions, the campaign encourages individuals, organizations, industries and governments to practice sustainable development by driving systemic change.
This year’s World Environment Day is celebrating just two months before countries gather to negotiate a global agreement to eliminate plastic pollution.
The global spotlight is on stopping plastic pollution, which is a major contributor to the world’s environmental pollution.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is #BeatPlasticPollution.”
Plastic pollution has been spreading worldwide for decades, entering our bodies as microplastics through drinking water and food, affecting every organ. Plastic pollution is a significant issue, but it’s also one of the most manageable environmental challenges. There are clear solutions available.
World Environment Day this year focuses on uniting global communities to tackle plastic pollution through the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign by UNEP.
World Environment Day will promote rejecting, reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic, emphasizing the scientific evidence of plastic pollution’s impact. It will also reinforce the global commitment to end plastic pollution through a global plastic pollution treaty in 2022.
As the host country of this year’s World Environment Day, the Republic of Korea is hosting the global celebration.
The Republic of Korea is hosting the global observation for World Environment Day for the second time. They first celebrated the day in 1997 under the theme “For Life on Earth.” In the last 28 years, the country has greatly improved water and air quality, managed chemicals safely, and protected ecosystems.
Today, South Korea is a leader in addressing plastic waste, leveraging years of experience in promoting producer responsibility among businesses. The country’s plastics strategy targets all stages of the plastic life cycle, including production, design, use, reuse, and recycling.
The strategy unites government, businesses, and consumers to change plastic usage and disposal methods. The Republic of Korea is actively reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainability by managing waste at its source, increasing recycling efforts, and moving towards a circular economy.
