The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued a Red alert for human beings.
The recent climate crisis we are facing is a consequence of irresponsible human activities after the Industrial Revolution, which happened within a short period. Such a type of climate change hasn’t happened in millions of years. Some changes occurred in such a way that there is no way back.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report , in 2019, atmospheric CO2 concentrations reached their highest level in two million years, while Methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (N2O) levels reached their highest level in 800,000 years.
Temperatures in 2011–2020 are higher than the most recent warm period, approximately 6,500 years ago (0.2°C to 1°C higher than in 1850– 1900).
The report also added, the land and oceans absorbed 56% of human-caused carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the last six decades. Temperatures have risen by 1°C as a result of human activity between 1850–1900 and 2010–2019. Scientists have warned that all of these phenomena are pointing humanity toward an unavoidable future.
The IPCC report further states that human beings are very close to ultimate danger as the global temperature continues to rise. Man is solely responsible for this.
“Within the next two decades, the global temperature could rise 1.5°C compared to the Pre-industrial area”, Reported by The Guardian citing a 42-page report entitled “Summary for Policymakers.”
It’s a clear indication that the promise of keeping global temperature rise below 2°C by world leaders during the Paris climate agreement in 2015 now seems quite impossible to fulfil.
The outcome of this global temperature rise will be drastic. Now, scientists cannot assure that sea-level rise up go 2meter within the end of this decade.
But still, a little light of hope came out in current reports of IPCC. Scientists are hoping that a massive decrease in greenhouse gas emissions will balance the increasing global temperature.
The IPCC has produced this report over almost six years after analyzing data from various research and studies done by hundreds of experts. The assessment mainly highlighted the latest realities of climate change around the world. The IPCC has issued six such reports since 1986.
According to these reports, human beings’ irresponsible and indiscriminate act has triggered such drastic events to happen more frequently. The quick rise of global temperature, melting of ice and glaciers in the polar region, extreme heatwaves, flood, and droughts are all results of human unawareness.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared the report as the highest warning or “Code Red” for humanity. He called for an immediate end to the use of coal and high-polluting fossil fuels as Fuel.
