No Justification for Environmental Destruction in the Name of Development: Syeda Rizwana Hasan
Dhaka: Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor on Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and Water Resources, has clearly stated that there is no justification for destroying the environment in the name of development.
She made this remark on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, while delivering the keynote speech at a session titled “Bangladesh Just Transition Academy: Decent Work for All in a Green Economy”, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) at the BICC in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
She emphasized that “the Department of Environment should not merely function as a ‘stamping authority’ for project approvals — this perception needs to change. For true sustainable development, policy coordination and structural transformation are essential.”
Referring to the effort to replace burnt clay bricks, she said, “Initiatives are underway, but structural change has not yet been achieved.” She also pointed out that when it comes to green buildings, a ‘green certificate’ alone is not enough. “It must be assessed whether the buildings are women-friendly, whether workers’ rest and safety are ensured, whether water is being reused, and whether sustainable energy is being utilized.”
She firmly stated, “Sustainable transformation cannot be confined only to the energy sector. Specific guidelines are needed across all sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and textiles.”
She concluded by expressing hope that if the government, international organizations, the private sector, and NGOs work together, these sustainable initiatives will be reflected in policy and become institutionally integrated.
