About 7.1 million people displaced this year in Bangladesh due to climate change: WHO

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 0.71 million Bangladeshis have been displaced this year due to climate change. According to WHO data, displaced persons will likely reach 1.33 million by 2050.

The WHO says Bangladesh has witnessed three major influxes of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals since 1978. Displaced citizens have medical needs and are settled in the world’s largest and most densely populated camp in Cox’s Bazar.

According to the World Health Organization, one in one billion are migrants worldwide, 281.1 million are international migrants, and several million are stateless. Growing inequality, climate change, conflict, trade, and population growth accelerate this trend.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Director General of WHO said, “Migration and displacement can have lasting effects on physical and mental health.

Health workers have an important role to play in overcoming these problems. A valuable resource for improving health workers’ capacity to serve refugees and migrants better is the WHO Global School on Refugee and Migrant Health.”

Among the participants, Dr. Poonam Kshetpal Singh, WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia, said,” The human right to health is a right that extends to all people everywhere, especially refugees and migrants.

Bangladesh has not only provided them with free health care but also recently given them the COVID-19 vaccination. It has also made concerted efforts to address their social, environmental, economic, and legal vulnerabilities.”
