‘Charvijay (Victory Island)’ wakes up the in the Bay of Bengal with new possibilities in biodiversity conservation in Bangladesh
An island has formed in the shallow waters of the Bay of Bengal in the southeast of Kuakata of Bangladesh, with an area of about 4046 hectares. A few years back, fishermen discovered this island in December, the victory month of Bangladesh and named it Char Vijay (Victory Island). The area of this island is increasing every year.
The island has become a sanctuary of millions of red crabs and native and exotic birds. Even though it submerges in water during the monsoon season, it wakes up in winter. As there is less human movement, guest birds gather in winter. Free roaming of red crabs and guest birds is a big attraction for travelers. Overall, Char Bijay is very popular among tourists.
The local public representative said if integrated activities of planned forestry and biodiversity conservation are taken, this char can add a new possibility to the sustainable tourism industry.
Recently, illegal fishing has started in this pasture. As a result, the free movement of birds and red crabs also hampers. Concerned people have demanded the conservation of the island.
