“World Ozone Day 2026” was observed globally on 16 September, 2026, marking the successful implementation of the “Montreal Protocol” —crucial for protecting the Earth’s atmosphere—and raising awareness about ozone layer preservation.
Responding to the call of international environmental organizations and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Bangladesh—like many other nations—organized special discussion meetings and awareness programs under the initiative of the Department of Environment.
This year’s theme focused on sustainable cooling technologies and the complete phase-out of ozone-depleting substances.
Key Agenda and Environmental Strategies: At a national seminar held at the Department of Environment in Dhaka, experts emphasized the need for strict measures against chemicals responsible for ozone layer depletion and global warming:
HFC Gases and Pollution in Cooling: Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are gases that air conditioners and fridges use. They damage the ozone layer and strongly affect the greenhouse effect. Emphasis was placed on adopting eco-friendly and energy-efficient cooling technologies in line with the Kigali Amendment.
Industrial Transformation: Dr Md. Lutfur Rahman, the Director General of the Department of Environment (Bangladesh), said at the seminar that moving the country’s industries and private businesses to green technologies is speeding up. Customs and relevant regulatory bodies were urged to enforce stricter controls to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting gases.
