The Department of Environment (Bangladesh)  is responsible for 70 percent of environmental pollution incidents in Bangladesh. The speakers presented such information in a virtual discussion titled ‘Plan for Ecological Recovery’ organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP).

BIP’s research analyzed 100 case studies of environmental disasters to analyze the causes of biodiversity and ecosystem destruction. Reviewing the incidence of environmental disasters, the BIP’s survey found that the Department of Environment is responsible for 70 percent of environmental pollution incidents.



Besides, the local administration of Bangladesh is responsible for 50 percent regarding this.

The urban authorities, municipalities, and city corporations are responsible for 50% of environmental pollution incidents; Factories, businesses, and manufacturing companies account for 50 percent, the forest department 30 percent, lack of proper planning 60 percent, and public indifference 40 percent.

Prof. Dr. Akhtar Mahmood, President, BIP, said, “We have to be sensitive to the environment and carry out all development activities from caring for the environment.”

He added that the environment should be given importance in all development policies and no wrong decision should be taken about the environment. At the same time, we need to move forward with planning and development in line with the global goal of sustainable development.

Professor. Adil Muhammad, General secretary of BIP, presented in the meeting a compilation of articles on environmental disasters published at different times throughout Bangladesh. Besides, some recommendations were made by BIP to protect the environment.

Abir-ul-Jabbar, Chief Planning Officer, Khulna City Corporation, Ajmeri Ashrafi, Urban Planner, Rajshahi Development Authority, Md. Maksud Hashem, Chief Urban Planner, Dhaka North City Corporation, Md. Nazrul Islam, Urban Planner, Rangpur City Corporation, Abu Saeed, Assistant Urban Planner of Khulna Development Authority, Nazim Uddin, Urban Planner of Cox’s Bazar Development Authority, Mohammad Saiful Islam, Urban Development Planner of Laksam Pourashava, Tamanna Binnet Rahman, Assistant Authorized Officer of Capital Development Authority, Tanvir Rahman, Planner, City planner of Sylhet City Corporation among all were present in the discussion meeting.
