Global coral reefs are experiencing the worst bleaching in recorded history.
Due to an abnormal increase in ocean temperatures, coral reefs around the world are experiencing the worst bleaching in recorded history. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently officially declared it a ‘global coral bleaching event’.
The severity of the crisis:
- Abnormal ocean heat: Corals from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean are losing their color and turning white due to El Niño and climate change. Corals are starving as algae that depend on corals die.
- Collapse of marine food chains: Although corals cover only 1% of the ocean, 25% of marine animals depend on them. If bleaching continues, the entire ocean food chain will collapse.
- Conclusion: There is no other option to save coral reefs than to reduce carbon emissions and prevent global warming. This is the biggest warning the ocean has given to humanity.
