Powerful sand mafias were destroying rivers like the Meghna River, the Dhaleshwari River and Someshwari River. The Bangladesh government has launched a nationwide ‘Operation Clean River’ against river encroachments and illegal dredging.
Without any political influence, the sand mafia’s dredgers are being burned and the encroached river banks are being recovered.
Rescue work and river environment: Nature and Surroundings
Dredger destruction: Naval police patrols have been increased to stop illegal sand mining in the dark of night. Illegal dredgers are being destroyed on the spot whenever they are found.
Riparian afforestation: Trees are being planted on a large scale on the recovered river banks to prevent erosion and restore biodiversity.
The lifeblood of riverine Bangladesh is its rivers. This government initiative to free the rivers from the hands of sand terrorists will revive the country’s fisheries and agricultural economy.
