Urgent Call for Strict Measures to Limit Global Warming by Fractions of a Degree at Pacific Pre-COP Meeting

A Pacific regional pre-COP meeting has concluded in Fiji ahead of the UN climate conference ‘COP31’, scheduled to be held in Antalya, Turkey, next November.

Scientists and world leaders stated in a statement on 7 October 2026 that Earth is in a major crisis because global warming is close to reaching the 1.5°C mark and severe El Niño conditions are causing more problems. Failure to control even a fraction of a degree of temperature rise could expose climate-vulnerable regions to irreparable damage.

Key Observations and International Threats: Highlighting the dire consequences of climate change, the meeting delivered several stern messages:

Small Pacific islands and delta regions such as Bangladesh could disappear because the sea levels are going up. The pre-COP meeting said that developed countries are cutting carbon emissions too slowly. Their efforts are not enough to deal with this global problem.

Compensation and Urgent Funding: there were strong calls for rich countries to create big financial plans to help people who had to move because of climate change. They also asked to make it easier to give out money from the Loss and Damage fund.

Conclusion and Green Page Opinion: Global warming isn’t just a theory anymore; it’s taking away the lives and livelihoods of millions daily. Green Page believes that before taking the main stage at the Antalya COP31 conference, industrialized nations must acknowledge their responsibility for historical carbon emissions and sign agreements committing to specific and drastic reductions.
