Elephant Corridor and Smart Sensors: Using Technology in Chittagong Hills, Bangladesh, to Protect Animalistic Wildlife

In 2026, when Bangladeshi wild elephants were in danger, a new technology project started in the forests of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar.

To lower ‘elephant-human conflict’ and let elephants move freely, the Forest Department of Bangladesh has started the ‘Smart Elephant Corridor’. Where AI-powered cameras and thermal sensors are controlling and protecting the movements of elephants.

When AI guards’ elephants In the past decades, many elephants have died while crossing railway lines or entering human settlements. In this 2026 system, sensors have been installed on the forest border.

When an elephant gets near the railway line or area, an alert is quickly sent to the train driver and the local range office’s mobile phone. As a result, not a single elephant has died accidentally in Bangladesh in the last one year.

Overpass and Underpass: A big ‘Wildlife Overpass’ in Asia opened in 2026 on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar railway line.

The camera team observed female elephants and their calves easily crossing the green overpass from one hill to another. This is a historic milestone in the conservation of biodiversity in Bangladesh.

Local participation: Another great aspect of this project is that the local villagers no longer consider elephants as enemies. By providing modern equipment and training to the ‘Elephant Response Team’ (ERT), they are ensuring the safety of elephants. This combination of technology and people in wildlife conservation is being appreciated worldwide.
