Bangladesh ranks after India and China in the list of the most polluted countries in the world. On the other hand, the capital of Dhaka ranks third globally in pollution among the big cities. The Global Burden of Disease Study Project report shows that air pollution is the fourth leading cause of death globally.

Air pollution kills more than 5.5 million people worldwide each year. Environmental experts say that if adequate measures and public awareness do not increase, Bangladesh will face terrible air pollution in the future. In addition, environmental issues, directly and indirectly, link to almost every one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

In particular, the goals that are directly related are:

  1. SDG-2:Food security, nutrition development, and sustainable development of agriculture; SDG-3: Ensuring good health for all;
  2. SDG-6: Potable water and sewerage system;
  3. SDG-7: Making fuel or electricity readily available to all;
  4. SDG-11: Keeping human settlements and cities safe and stable;
  5. SDG-12: Responsible use of resources;
  6. SDG-13: Climate Action;
  7. SDG-14: Ensuring conservation and moderate use of seas, oceans, and marine resources for sustainable development;
  8. SDG-15: Sustainable use of land;
  9. SDG-16: Building a peaceful and participatory society, justice for all, effective, accountable, and participatory institutions at all levels; And
  10. SDG-17: To determine the means of implementation for sustainable development and bring stability to the global partnership.

Therefore, the direct impact on the environment feels in implementing SDGs.

However, due to the pressure of the growing population and uncontrolled pollution of human beings, nature is constantly being destroyed.

The environment is helping the people in various ways and nurturing the people of this society with all its resources; on the other hand, humans are doing everything to destroy nature.

As a result, the environment is deteriorating rapidly. The environment is polluted uncontrollably due to the increase of dangerous gases in the air, and as a result, global warming is accelerating day by day. Consequently, the global climate is shifting.

Environmental pollution makes it difficult for aquatic animals to survive in the water because they do not get enough oxygen. The plant cannot stay fresh. Forests are being cut down freely, and as a result, wild animals face a habitat crisis.

There are many adverse reactions to the effects of environmental disasters. Natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, wildfires, tsunamis, floods, and droughts are rising worldwide. Because of global warming, the sea level is rising.

Moreover, that is why the coastal areas are sinking. In this regard, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change  (IPCC) stated in 2007, “The water level in the Bay of Bengal will increase by 1 meter by 2050.”

As a result, the Maldives will disappear from the face of the earth. Even 17 percent of Bangladesh’s coastal land will go under the sea. Climate change is increasing salinity and flooding in coastal soils.

The shortage of potable water is due to the lowering of the water level in the soil. Environmental disasters have had a devastating effect on seasonal variability in recent times.

The smoke from the brick kiln pollutes the air and crops soil in many villages. Furthermore, due to underdeveloped vehicles and haphazard management, Dhaka’s air pollution increases.

Noise pollution from vehicle horns and microphones has become severe. As polythene bags are non-biodegradable, using them pollutes the environment, including closing drains and maintenance holes. Polythene is a waste; when dumped in the river, they also jeopardize the living of aquatic animals.

People are cruelly destroying the natural environment. With the pollution of the environment, the human character is also being polluted.

If we are not conscious of protecting our environment, we will not be able to survive on the earth for long. We will vanish because of our reckless actions.

We must take the first step to save the environment. We have to change our lifestyle. Using environmentally friendly technology will further reduce the level of pollution. For example, the production of plastics must stop and its use.

The new generation has learned to think a lot. However, they are responsible for destroying the environment in most cases; they do not directly understand. However, they can alter their way of life and their environmental impact.

They can make their homes, schools, and youth groups more eco-friendly by adopting environmentally friendly practices, recycling various materials, and conserving resources such as water and electricity.
