Human chain in Patuakhali of Bangladesh, to stop plastic pollution to protect the environment

A few voluntary organizations, environmental activists and common people have organized a human chain in Kalapara of Patuakhali to demand an end to plastic pollution.

The human chain took place at Char Chapali Islamia Secondary School on the morning of April 27, 2024. Various organizations and locals, such as Dharitri Rakshaya Amara (Dhara), Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Amara Kalaparavasi, Kuakata Tour Guide Association, Kuakata Tarun Club, and Kuakata Boys Club, participated in the human chain.

Gazi Ali Ahmed, the head teacher of Char Chapli Islamia Secondary School, said, “Excessive plastic and polythene usage is causing serious illnesses like cancer.”

“River channels getting filled causes environmental pollution and flooding, becoming a threat to civilization. So I demand strict implementation of polythene ban law,” he added.

Obaidul, president of Dholai Market Fishermen’s Association, said, “Twenty-two million pounds of plastic waste is thrown into the sea in a year. Plastic waste is already a threat in terms of pollution. It tops all as a single pollutant when it comes to ocean pollution. Due to this, the appetite of fish is decreasing.”

Kamal Hasan Roni, representative of Waterkeepers Bangladesh in Kalapara, mentioned the various environmental issues contributing to soil, water, and air pollution, as well as global warming and loss of biodiversity. These issues include deforestation, industrial expansion, harmful gas emissions, and the use of toxic chemicals. Being, plants, animals and microorganisms are also in crisis.

Students and people from different professions joined hands in a human chain to work from their positions and restore the green and peaceful environment of the forest area.
