India plagued by pollution – Report of Lancet Planetary Health
It is not a new thing that pollution has spread like a silent pandemic in this world. Researchers have repeatedly said that there is a greater danger if not careful.
Recent reports from the The Lancet Planetary Health – Journals show just how horrific the situation in India has become in the wake of this onslaught of pollution. In 2019, about 2.4 million people died in India due to pollution. Of these, 1. 6 million 70 thousand people are the victims of air pollution alone.
According to the Lancet Journal, Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is responsible for 0.98 million deaths due to air pollution. These pollutants have spread by particles smaller than two and a half microns or less. In addition, 0.81 million people have died due to pollution caused during domestic work.
In India, air pollution most affects northern India. In addition, 9 million people worldwide died in 2019 due to pollution.
The lead author of the study, Richard Feeler, a member of the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution in Geneva, Switzerland, said that increasing pollution is increasingly affecting public health. The worst affected are the low- and middle-income countries.
Richard Feeler also said that India had taken various steps against air pollution. The Commission for Air Quality was set up in Delhi in 2019. However, the research paper also mentions that the country has no strong central infrastructure to control air pollution.
