Plan to implement the Geo-cycle system in Bangladesh to reduce plastic pollution

Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, informed, “Necessary guidelines will formulate to implement Sustainable Plastic Management Action Plan (SPMAP) to protect country’s Plastic pollution.



She recently discussed it in a SPMAP implementation meeting jointly organized by MOEFCC and World Bank. That meeting discussed the Geo- cycle Implementation of the modern waste management implementation system with LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited.

 Yoon Ju Alison Yee, Senior Climate expert at the World Bank, and Syed Rizwana Hasan, Executive Director of  Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) were also present at that meeting.

In that meeting, the World Bank placed its plan on Sustainable Plastic Management Action Plan (SPMAP) and its financing.

 “The World Bank has formulated the draft Extended producer responsibility (EPR) work plan implementation,” informed the meeting World Bank representative.

Syed Rewena Hasan, the Executive Director of BELA, delivered her speech about the Drafted EPR Guideline.



Kaushik Mukherjee, the head of the Geo-cycle department of Lafarz Holcim presented the Geo-Cycle Waste Management System (GWMS) in the meeting. The Holcim Company is implementing waste burning without any residues by using Geo- Cycle System keeping the temperature in the furnace between 80 – 2000 degrees Celsius.

 “No Green House Gases are produced due to burning of all waste without keeping any residues and because of the use of waste instead of fossil fuel in the Geo-cycle system,” he informed the house.

In the President’s speech, MOEFCC’s Secretary, Dr. Farhina Ahmed, praised the geo-cycle system and said, “BD government will implement this waste management system if it is found to be eco-friendly and effectively implementable after field level observation.”

“The Sustainable Plastic Management Action Plan Guidelines will be formulated after discussion with all concerned,” she added.
