Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented four suggestions to the world leaders, including reducing carbon emissions to tackle climate change, ensuring US$100 billion annually in climate damage mitigation and rehabilitation, and focusing more on environmentally friendly technologies.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the remarks in a video message at the inaugural session of the two-day Leaders Summit on Climate change organized by US President Joe Biden.

Joe Biden invited 40 world leaders, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to that conference.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked developed countries to adopt immediate ambitious action plans to reduce carbon emissions to keep global temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius in this century. In addition, she asked developing countries to focus on mitigation measures against climate change.



Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s second suggestion was to the developed countries to ensure an annual target of US$100 billion funding to the Climate affected developing countries, of which 50 percent expanded for adaptation and the remaining 50 percent for the mitigation of climate change.

 She called on G8 (Group of Eight) and G20 countries, international financial institutions, and the private sectors to come forward to funding innovation and climate change actions. -as her third suggestion. As a fourth suggestion, the Prime Minister said, “There is a need to transfer to a green economy and carbon-neutral technology.”

Sheikh Hasina further said, “The COVID-19 pandemic reminds us that global crises can only tackle through concerted action.”

Thanking US President Joe Biden for hosting the conference, Sheik Hasina said, “Bangladesh appreciates the interest of the United States in returning to the Paris Agreement and engaging the international community in it.”

Despite being a climate-affected country with limited resources, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mentioned Bangladesh’s success in adaptation and mitigation in the globe.”Every year, Bangladesh spends US$5 billion on climate change adaptation and construction of sustainable infrastructure, which is 2.5 percent of our GDP,” She added.

The Prime Minister mentioned the 1.1 million Rohingya people deported from Myanmar to Bangladesh for shelter and the resulting of which damage to the Bangladeshi environment.

Sheikh Hasina mentioned that Bangladesh is celebrating Mujib Year and on the occasion of the birth centenary of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and also the golden jubilee of independence of the country. The Prime Minister highlighted the initiative to plant 30 million trees across the country on the occasion of Mujib Year.
