Scattered used plastic bottles were collected from various places and first gathered in one place. Later, straw was cut and inserted inside it. In this way, each bird nest was made.

Then, some students tied these nests tightly to tree branches. They say the initiative aims to raise public awareness about stopping bird hunting and reducing plastic use.

This exceptional activity was taken by 10 to 12 students from Dharmapasha Upazila of

Sunamganj District, Bangladesh. Most of them are students of various educational institutions, including the Upazila Town.

From morning to afternoon on November 28, the students were seen forming teams to make bird nests. They tied 50 nests to branches of trees at Badshaganj Government High School, Badshaganj Degree College, Badshaganj Land Office, Baulam Government Primary School, and in the villages of Baulam and Matikata.

Rifat Jamil, a former student of Badshaganj Government High School and a student of oceanography at Noakhali University of Science and Technology, Tanvir Hasan, a member of Gazipur Bandhushaba, Robin Ahmed, Sumon Ahmed, Tashrif Muzakkir, Farhan Ahmed, students of Badshaganj Degree College, and others participated in this program.

Rifat Jamil, the chief coordinator of this program, said, “Bird hunting is a crime. However, birds are hunted freely without paying attention to the laws and regulations. This is leading to the extinction of various species of birds. The chirping of birds that I used to hear in my childhood is no longer heard.

“We started this initiative to raise awareness about stopping bird hunting and reducing plastic use,” he informed.

Mohammad Gias Uddin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Darmapasha Upazilla, praised the initiative of the students. In this regard, he said, the initiative of the students is very commendable. This is a shining example to raise public awareness to stop bird hunting and prevent the use of plastic. The hope is that this program will spread throughout the country.
