Single-use plastic is to be banned in Bangladesh. The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid. August and September will be used as preparation time for government officials and employees before the ban takes effect. During this period, guidelines and instructions will be provided to reduce the use of plastic within the Secretariat. The announcement was made during a seminar organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The seminar was titled: “Sustainable Plastic Use in the Secretariat: A Future for a Single-Use, Plastic-Free Environment.” Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid spoke as the chief guest at the event. He stated that plastic pollution is a global issue, and Bangladesh must collaborate with the international community to tackle it. He highlighted the need for effective medical waste management, stressing that action must be taken now for our benefit and that of future generations. During her presidential remarks at the seminar, Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed announced that the Ministry of Environment would swiftly create and implement an action plan to enforce the ban on single-use plastics in the Secretariat. The seminar also featured remarks from Finance Division Secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, Housing and Public Works Secretary Md. Nazrul Islam, and UNIDO Country Representative Zaki Uz Zaman. The keynote paper was presented by Fahmida Khanam, Additional Secretary (Environment) of the Ministry of Environment. The government has already identified 17 items as single-use plastics. This includes disposable plastic plates, cups, spoons, chocolate wrappers, plastic invitation cards, banners, thin plastic packaging, and plastic bottles with caps. Once the ban is in place, the Secretariat will be the first government office in the country to fully eliminate single-use plastics. This is regarded as a significant step toward environmental protection.
