BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has promised to implement five major initiatives to protect the environment if voted to power.

June 5 marked the celebration of World Environment Day. He made this promise in a statement sent to the media on the occasion.

Tarique Rahman emphasized the need for a practical and forward-thinking national strategy due to the worsening climate crisis and industrial pollution. He stated that if the BNP comes to power, they will take measures to protect Bangladesh’s environment.

Tarique Rahman pledged five key initiatives from the BNP to safeguard the country’s environment. They are:

  • Formulating a national green recovery plan by prioritizing, reforestation, renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.
  • Banning harmful plastics and toxic chemicals and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly products for industry and households.
  • To combat waterlogging and protect the aquatic environment, undertake a full-scale dredging and restoration program of rivers and canals,
  • Assist in developing climate-resilient agriculture and infrastructure in vulnerable southern regions.
  • Integrate environmental education into the school curriculum to create a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

Tarique Rahman said, “Environmental conservation is not a luxury; it is an urgent task. Due to its geographical location, Bangladesh is unique in its natural beauty and ecological diversity. Therefore, it is everyone’s sacred duty to protect this rich and unique environment for future generations.”

He said that BNP has been an environmentally conscious political party since its inception. In 1977, BNP founder Ziaur Rahman initiated an environmental pollution control project that eventually evolved into a key department within the Department of Environment, Bangladesh.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia enacted the ‘Bangladesh Environmental Conservation Act’ in 1995 and established the country’s first environmental court.

He said in the statement that he has been leading various initiatives to create public awareness, including the National Tree Plantation Program, Canal Digging Program and Canal Maintenance Projects, and imposing a ban on the use of harmful polythene and plastic.

He urged the people to create a sustainable Bangladesh within the nation’s political and social frameworks, ensuring that future generations inherit a green and livable country.
