Md Shahab Uddin, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), said, “The Bangladesh government is working tirelessly to ensure safe water, sanitation, and a healthy environment for all its citizens. We are finalizing our National Adaptation Plan (NAP) with due attention to water and sanitation for all.”

He spoke at a sector ministerial meeting on Saturday (May 21st) hosted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, at a “Water for All, Sanitation, Healthy Environment for All” conference.

“As part of the COVID -19 response, our local government department has developed a strategy to ensure water, sanitation, and a healthy environment. This strategy, designed for 2020-2023, is helping our people during and after the COVID -19 period.

Our success is in reducing the number of COVID -19 infections and deaths linked to our success in tackling the three-pronged crisis before the Covid-19 outbreak. The government has provided open defecation-free sanitation and essential water to 98% of our population.

Four of our nine commitments to ensure sanitation and water are being implemented by the governments and five by civil society. We plan to triple our water, sanitation, and hygiene investment in ten years,” the Environment Minister continued.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has been playing an essential role as the chairman of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) of 55 countries.

Bangladesh has formulated a nationally determined contribution and a long-term Delta Plan 2100, the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan to turn weaknesses into prosperity.

Our self-financed Bangladesh Climate Change Trust has enabled us to undertake 800 projects to save the lives and livelihoods of millions of vulnerable people in the face of climate change.

We have turned our climate change challenges into opportunities and provided a better life for the people tackling our climate change consequences,’’ the environment ministry further added.
