15th Bangladesh Cycle Lane Day celebrated in Dhaka

On Friday, April 10, 2026, at 9 am, the country celebrated its 15th Cycle  Lane Day at the National Museum in the capital, Dhaka. The event included a short discussion and a big bicycle rally.

Many groups showed support at this event. These included the University Campus Newspaper, Brain and Life Hospital, Keraniganj United Cyclists, Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Public College Cyclists, Mirpur Stunt Boys Club, Green Page News Portal, Global Study, BD Tourist Cyclists, and various other environmental groups.

The day was celebrated with the joint initiative of 9 like-minded organizations, including the Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council. This year’s 15th Bangladesh Cycle Lane Day had the theme: “Save the environment, save energy, be healthy, and ease traffic by making cycle lanes and cycle parking areas.”

Aminul Islam Tubbus, President of the Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council, presided over the discussion. The meeting, moderated by M. A. Wahed, Joint Secretary of Poribesh Bachao Andolan (POBA), was attended by Dr. M. Helal, Editor-in-Chief of University Campus Newspaper.

The keynote speaker was Green Page News Portal Editor and environmentalist Engineer Md. Mahfuzur Rahman. Fakrul Hossain, Managing Director of Brain and Life Hospital, Md. Abdul Alim, Lecturer of Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Public College, Md. Rafiqul Hasan, the President of Keraniganj United Cyclists, Abtabur Rahman, the Co-Treasurer of BSGF, and other leaders attended as special guests.

At the start of the program, everyone stood for a minute of silence to remember the cyclists who died in road accidents in Bangladesh. They showed great respect for them. The speakers said that a bicycle is more than just a way to get around.

It represents freedom for rider, adds joy to life, and is good for the environment. Although more than 1 billion people around the world use bicycles, there are no specific statistics on this in Bangladesh. However, it is estimated that more than two hundred thousand bicycles are used in urban areas.

The speakers also said that the movement of motor vehicles and bicycles together is not safe. There aren’t enough bike lanes in the country, so cyclists often face danger and have accidents.

The speakers mentioned that there is not enough parking for cars and motorcycles in public parks, markets, playgrounds, public places, offices, courts, apartment buildings, and houses. Some shopping malls, like Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Dhaka, have places to park bikes.

However, most other malls, even those run by the government, do not have any bike parking. Bicycles may be stolen because there aren’t safe parking spots. Because of this, many cyclists in the country stop using bicycles, even though they want to ride.

As a result, bicycles are not being spread in the country. The number of cars is going up instead of bicycles. This causes harm to the environment, makes the country spend more money on fuel, increases traffic jams in cities, and puts citizens’ health at risk.

It’s important to have safe bicycle lanes and parking spots all over the country. This is needed now more than ever.

The speakers highlighted the importance of cycling in building a healthy nation and ensuring a green environment. They said that this movement will gain momentum through the active participation of the young generation and increasing public awareness.

The bicycle rally began at the National Museum in Dhaka after the discuss and finished back at the same spot, going through Doyel Chattar.
