It should ensure a complete list of rivers in Bangladesh d to protect the environment.
Bangladesh Environmental Movement Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) has called for a complete list of rivers based on the opinions and participation of environmental movement workers, local organizations for river protection, and representatives of social organizations.
Besides, the organization has also said to undertake river surveys if necessary to ensure a complete list of rivers, like a population survey.
A discussion meeting was held on October 04, 2023, with the National River Conservation Commission’s
Chairman, Dr Manjur Ahmed Chowdhury. The BAPA made this demand in the meeting held at the National River Conservation Commission’s office.
BAPA President Professor Noor Mohammad Talukder, Vice President Mahidul Haque Khan, Vice President Architect Iqbal Habib, General Secretary Alamgir Kabir, and Joint Secretary Aminur Rasul were present.
In the bilateral discussion, the other proposals put forward by the BAPA in the meeting are that by publishing the partial list of the river, it should take initiatives to ensure that the encroachers do not get the opportunity to occupy the unpublished river. The Commission should be more proactive in protecting rivers from encroachment and pollution.
In the discussion meeting, a joint initiative of BAPA and the National River Conservation Commission was called to send a team to inspect the current condition of Baral River and Chalan Beel.
It is requested that an order be placed to inform the Deputy Commissioner of the inclusion of BAPA in the river affairs committee of the police stations and districts.
A joint initiative of the National River Conservation Commission and the Bangladesh Environmental Movement was also called upon to hold an exchange meeting.
At the end of the discussion, the President of BAPA handed over various publications and recommendations on BAPA’s River to the Chairman of the National River Conservation Commission.
