Raintrees are dying in Satkhira, Bangladesh, due to climate change
Climate change has reduced rainfall in coastal areas in Bangladesh. Because of this the salinity of the soil has increased over the years. As a result, about 1500 rain trees have died on various roadsides and highway sides of Satkhira, Bangladesh, environmentalists said.
The rows of trees on both sides of the roads have become dangerous now. Pedestrians are injured by broken branches. Road vehicles are often involved in accidents.
The number of accidents on the Satkhira-Ashashuni road is on the rise. Parents are scared to send their kids to school because they are worried about their safety due to the situation on the road.
Dr. Nasreen Akhtar, from the Department of Botany at Satkhira Government College, mentioned that soil salinity and alkalinity are among the reasons for the death of rain trees.
Moreover, each tree has its own characteristics. Rainfall has decreased due to climate change. If there is no monsoon rain, the rain tree plants suffer from food shortage. Apart from this, trees can also die due to various viruses.
Dr. Nasreen Akhtar’s findings show how different factors are causing rain trees to decline. She emphasizes the interconnectedness of environmental changes and their impact on plant life. To preserve and protect rain trees, it is important to understand their vulnerabilities and specific needs.
This understanding will help in developing targeted conservation strategies, ensuring the survival of these vital components of our ecosystem. Conserving rain trees is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and supporting the overall health of our environment.
