Green transformation of the garment sector: When ‘zero-waste’ is the key to world domination

Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry has achieved world-class status not only for production but also for ‘greenness’ in 2026.

The industrial areas of Gazipur and Mymensingh are no longer a source of smoke or chemical waste. Around 400 factories in Bangladesh now use a circular or zero-waste model, enhancing the country’s global market position.

Recycled fabric and chemical recycling The ‘fabric-to-fiber’ technology that started in 2025 has reached its full potential in 2026. Factory waste is no longer being thrown away or burned to destroy the environment. New yarn is being made from this waste through advanced mechanical and chemical recycling.

Leading European brands are now flocking to Bangladesh in droves to purchase clothing labeled as ‘recycled.’ Our research shows that 20 percent of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment export revenue in 2026 will come from this eco-friendly product.

n 2026, 100 factories in Bangladesh have received full ‘carbon neutral’ certification. These factories are generating 100% of their electricity from solar and biomass. Rainwater is being collected, processed and used for dyeing clothes, resulting in zero pressure on groundwater.

The BGMEA states that Bangladesh’s strong focus on environmental protection has positioned it ahead of Vietnam and India.

This green revolution in the garment industry is proving that environmental protection and industrial development can go hand in hand. In 2026, Bangladesh will not only be a country of cheap labor, but also the world’s largest ‘green industrial hub’.
