The Halda River in Chittagong, Bangladesh, is Asia’s only natural fish breeding center and a source of pride for the country. Motorized boats are not allowed: Several endangered dolphins died because of the propellers from engine-powered boats in the river. This also disturbed the movement of mothers and fish. To prevent the premature death of dolphins, the movement of any type of engine-powered boat has been completely banned in Halda and round-the-clock speedboat patrols have been strengthened to protect the river.
Illegal sand mining completely stopped: Unplanned sand mining from the banks and riverbed of Halda was causing erosion and destroying the geographical structure of the river. Direct and strict legal action is being taken against illegal sand miners by seizing dredgers in a joint operation by the local administration and the Coast Guard.
The Halda River is very important for fish and the economy in Bangladesh. It is not just any river; it is a valuable resource for the country’s fishing industry. Every year, during the rainy season, mother fish lay eggs in this river. The young fish, like Rui, Katla, Mrigel, and Kalbaus, are taken to ponds and water bodies all over the country.
If the river is pollution-free and safe, it is easier to meet the country’s fish shortage. In addition, the freshwater dolphins living in Halda are the biggest bio-indicators or natural indicators of the health of this river. The safe movement of dolphins proves that the river ecosystem is slowly recovering.
The law is being enforced strictly, and people are more aware. Due to this Bangladesh government campaign, the use of illegal nets and night fishing in Halda has decreased significantly. Awareness meetings are being held with local fishermen and they are being involved in protecting Halda through alternative employment.
