Bangladesh to Prioritize Jute as a Sustainable Alternative to Plastic and Advocate for Climate Justice at COP31

Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to be held in Antalya, Turkey, in November 2026, Bangladesh has unveiled its strategic agenda.

On October 16, 2026, an official report said Bangladesh wants to strongly promote “climate justice” and seek funds for “loss and damage” worldwide. Simultaneously, the country will showcase the versatile potential of the “golden fibre”—jute—as an eco-friendly, biodegradable natural fiber.

Key Agenda and Strategy on the Global Stage: Specific proposals that Bangladesh will present during international negotiations include:

Bangladesh plans to seek help from developed countries to support the use of biodegradable items and jute bags, hoping to tackle global plastic waste.

Bangladesh will clearly demand climate finance. They want clear rules and easy terms to help carry out National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) in countries that are at risk from climate change.

Conclusion and Green Page Perspective: By showing jute not just as a call for help, but as a worldwide answer to plastic waste, Bangladesh will improve its environment and economy on a global level.

Green Page believes that this policy stance will enable Bangladesh to play a leading role in climate diplomacy at the Antalya conference.
