The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have warned people around the world in a report they created together for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The report from Geneva, Switzerland, on October 13, 2026, shows that climate change has caused a big rise—compared to earlier times—in the number of strange heatwaves, the effects of unusual “Super El Niño” events, and floods and droughts from too much rain.
Key information and global needs: The report strongly urges world leaders to act quickly with money and laws within global climate rules.
Many countries face serious economic pressure. In the developing economies of Asia and Africa, rebuilding infrastructure after weather disasters takes up a big part of their yearly Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Consequently, progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—such as those related to education, health, and poverty alleviation—is being severely hampered.
Global Warning Before COP31: This data about climate risk reduction is a strong alert for negotiators before the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) next month in Antalya, Turkey. On this day, demands were reiterated for industrialized nations to reduce carbon emissions and for the release of direct compensation funds to climate-vulnerable countries.
Conclusion and Green Page Perspective: Producing carbon emissions worldwide and providing climate funding to affected countries are key for the success of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Green Page believes that we can only protect the Earth by changing international statements and special occasions into helpful actions for the environment.
