Arctic black carbon

A rising international concern, intensifying ice melt

The buildup of black carbon from industrial pollution and illegal shipping in the Arctic has heightened concerns about environmental crime.

Black carbon is made of fine particles from incomplete combustion. When it settles on ice and snow, it absorbs sunlight and speeds up melting. This process is a serious threat to Arctic biodiversity and global sea level rise.

Recent research shows that much of the black carbon in the Arctic comes from untreated shipping and industrial activities in northern countries like Russia.

The accumulation of black carbon on ice reduces its ability to reflect light (albedo effect). Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have warned that this increased absorption could increase global average temperatures by up to 0.2 degrees Celsius by 2050.

New Arctic shipping routes are expanding quickly as sea lanes open, but the lack of strict fuel regulations is increasing pollution.

International environmental groups are urging stronger laws to reduce black carbon emissions in the Arctic. They aim to accelerate the transition to clean fuels for older ships and enhance satellite surveillance to monitor pollution sources and smugglers.
