Bangladesh will sign all the International Environmental Agreements: Minister of Environment, Bangladesh
Md Shahab Uddin, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Bangladesh, said, “As part of international initiatives to protect the environment, Bangladesh has ratified and supported the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, and The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.”
“To curb climate change, Bangladesh would unconditionally reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7 percent and conditionally by 16 percent by 2030. Work on the Bangladesh National Adaptation Plans (NAP) is in its final stages,” the Environment Minister added.
During a meeting with the Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh, Nathalie Chuard, he made the remarks at the ministry’s conference room.
The Minister further said, “Despite the limited land area of Bangladesh, 5.77 percent of the country’s land area declares as a nature reserve, of which 48 are protected areas, and 13 are environmentally critical areas.
Besides, four marine protected areas already have been declared for 6.20 percent of the total marine area of the country. The conservation of biodiversity through the Tanguar Haor Community-Based Sustainable Management project to establish a sustainable management system in the Ramsar site is a shining example of Swiss development cooperation.
The Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Adaptation Initiative seek Switzerland’s cooperation to conserve further and restore all-important ecosystems inland and sea areas.”
Nathalie Chuard, Switzerland’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, said, “Switzerland’s cooperation in biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation and mitigation activities will continue to grow.”
