Delta Plan 2100 and Coastal Agriculture and Forestry in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels and salinity have become a major problem, especially in the southwestern coastal districts of the country. The Bangladesh government’s ‘Delta Plan 2100’ and the new ways local farmers are handling this crisis are now getting worldwide praise.

Coastal afforestation is important. It helps protect against cyclones and tidal waves. The ‘green belt’ project has been made stronger. Efforts are being made to prevent tidal waves naturally by planting mangrove trees in the areas surrounding the Sundarbans. This afforestation is not only protecting the environment, but also creating employment opportunities for the local people.

Salinity-tolerant farming: Rice cultivation is no longer possible in vast areas of Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat due to salinity. However, the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed some rice varieties that can tolerate high salinity and yield. Farmers are now trying to get more crops from a small space by using ‘vertical farming’ or growing climbing plants.

Climate adaptation and technology: Coastal farmers in Bangladesh can now get weather forecasts and soil salinity measurements through mobile apps. The use of this digital technology has greatly reduced crop damage. Small filter plants are being built to make fresh water from salty water. This provides safe drinking water.

Bangladesh is today a role model in the world in climate adaptation. Trust funds that are self-financed and local innovations show that people can survive even in tough situations. This is a positive message for GreenPage readers. With good planning and public awareness, we can stop climate change.
