From rooftop farming to ‘rooftop farms’: A new revolution in Dhaka’s nutritional security

Dhaka is no longer just a city of buildings. In 2026, Dhaka will look like a huge green garden when viewed from the sky. After RAJUK’s rule for ‘green roofs’, around 80% of buildings in Dhaka now have gardens on their roofs. This is being called ‘Urban Farming 2.0’.

Nutrition Security and Micro-Climate: After the hot weather in 2025, the people of Dhaka learned that using air conditioning to cool their homes is not a lasting fix. Rooftop gardening has reduced the temperature inside the building by 3-5 degrees Celsius.

In 2026, about 15% of Dhaka’s vegetable demand is being met from these rooftop farms. This is reducing transportation costs and the common man is getting fresh, poison-free vegetables.

Economic Model: Rooftop farming is no longer a hobby; it is a source of income. In 2026, many educated young individuals have launched startups focused on ‘Urban Farming.’ They are leasing the roofs of various buildings and cultivating lettuce, tomatoes and strawberries using modern hydroponic methods.

The Dhaka South and North City Corporations have established special “green markets” to sell these vegetables. Dhaka is now on its way to being recognized as the world’s largest ‘urban agricultural city’.
