Solid-state batteries: The industrial revolution of 2026 and the fall of lithium’s dominance

2026 will be remembered in the future as the ‘year of the battery revolution’. Japan’s Toyota and China’s CATL have jointly announced that their first commercial ‘solid-state battery’ powered cars are now available on the global market. The technology completely eliminates the biggest hurdles in the world of electric vehicles (EVs)—charging time and range anxiety.

Conventional lithium-ion batteries contain liquid electrolytes, which increase the risk of fire and take a long time to charge. But this new solid-state battery from 2026 uses a solid ceramic layer.

As a result, cars are charging 80 percent in just 7 minutes and traveling more than 1,200 kilometers on a single charge. The biggest thing is that these batteries work the same way at temperatures from -40 degrees Celsius to 80 degrees Celsius.

The use of cobalt and nickel has been reduced by 40 percent in this new battery. The environmental and human rights violations that used to occur during cobalt extraction are now being reduced to a large extent. In addition, the durability of solid-state batteries is three times longer than ordinary batteries, which is reducing the amount of battery waste.

China announced the first national standard or criterion for solid-state batteries in January 2026. As a result, companies in Europe and America are also now rapidly shifting to this technology.

Experts believe that the dream of half of the world’s cars being electric by 2030 is now possible by 2027.
