Solid waste management is an important issue for the environment

The representatives of Dhaka’s marginalized people have emphasized on highlighting the concept of inclusion and implementation of solid waste management for marginalized people in the media. They said that the mass media should come forward to implement the solid waste management roadmap.

They said these things in an exchange meeting with journalists under the initiative of Dhaka Calling project in Mohammadpur of the capital on July 10, 2024.

Nikhil Bhadra, a journalist, chaired the meeting where Abdus Sobhan, the President of Paribesh and Jalbaio Andalon-পরিজা (Environment and Climate Change Movement), spoke. Mahbul Haque moderated the event.



Aminur Rasool, Joint General Secretary of angladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA); Naira Nizam, Counterpart International ‘s Representative; Ferdous Ahmed, Project Manager of BARCIK; Jasmine Molly, Jasmine Molly, Monitoring and Documentation Manager of DSK, Hosne Ara Begum Rafeza, President of Bastibasi Odhikar Sukhara Committee (Slum Rights Protection Committee), Journalist Leader Rafiqul Islam Azad, Sakila Parveen, Tanveer Ahmed, Sharful Alam and others.

Abdus Sobhan, Environmental engineer, said, “There is no lack of law in Bangladesh, the lack is its proper implementation.” “Solid waste management is a very important issue for our overall environment.

Due to inadequate waste management, our country faces numerous environmental problems. “The Government should take a coordinated approach and hold each Ministry accountable for their work,” he told further.

He also said that the media is the main vehicle to present everything to the nation. Therefore, media awards and fellowships should be initiated to encourage more media workers.

Aminur Rasool, joint general secretary of BAPA, said, “The major problem of waste management is the lease system. It is important to take concerted initiatives to turn waste into resources.”

“And for this I want a roadmap. The roadmap will ensure the participation and rights of marginalized people,” he opined.

Hosne Ara Begum Rafeza, chairperson of Bastibasi Odhikar Sukhara Committee, said that if there is any disease, medicine should be given for that disease, we need a similar roadmap for managing garbage/garbage in the city.
