We are constantly losing the fight to stop climate change: Antonio Guterres

In the opening speech of the COP 27 climate conference in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, world leaders, and diplomats highlighted the fight against global warming as a battle for human survival.

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has warned that we are losing the battle to curb climate change, saying the world is speeding down the highway to hell.

This harsh message set the tone for the world governments’ climate talks at the holiday center on the coast of Egypt. State leaders in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East echoed this message.

“Cooperation or destruction: humanity must choose between them,” the UN chief told delegates at the conference.

He called for accelerating the move away from the use of fossil fuels and for quick financing of developing countries already suffering from the adverse effects of climate change.

Guterres said, ”Europe’s land wars, deteriorating diplomatic relations between the US and China, the top two greenhouse gas emitters, hyperinflation, and limited energy supplies threaten to push countries further away from the fight against climate change and off track to clean energy transitions.

Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing, global temperatures are continuing to rise, and our planet is rapidly approaching a level that will make climate chaos irreversible.”
