The Dhaka North City Corporation issued an ultimate to stop dumping sewage into the rainwater drainage systems and the water reservoirs

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) gave time from January to March 2021 to those who have arranged for direct disposal of sewage from homes and various institutions to rainwater drainage systems or/and canals or/and lakes or/and other reservoirs, instead of constructing septic tank of their owns.

The DNCC issued this notice on January 2021 and said, “We will take legal action if they do not construct septic tank within the given period.”

The respective were asked in the notice to establish proper sewage management systems by constructing septic tanks and soak wells in homes, commercial institutions, and other installments according to government rules.

“Even then, many houses and installations connected its sewage lines directly to the rainwater drainage systems or/and canals or/and lakes or/and different types of reservoirs under Dhaka north city.

These types of heinous activities of city dwellers are a great threat to the city’s environment and also a punishable act under the Bangladesh Local Government Act- 2009.”

In the notice, the residents of North Dhaka also requested to disconnect illegal sewerage lines of all residential houses, commercial institutions, and other installments on their initiative and install septic tanks and soak wells by 31st March 2021.

In 2019, the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) research report stated, “Dhaka generates 1.5 million cubic meters of sewage every day, of which 20% remains at the source. Only 40,000 cubic meters go to the Sewage Treatment Plant. The rest 117,000 cubic meters of waste is discharging into the river in an unrefined state.”

According to the report, if the river pollution will not stop in this way, it will not be possible for WASA to supply pure and safe water for the residents of Dhaka, even if it spends millions of taka.
