The ‘Don’t Gas Asia’ campaign started in Dhaka to stop fossil fuel expansion

The ‘Don’t Gas Asia’ campaign has been launched in Dhaka to stop the expansion of fossil fuels in Bangladesh. The ‘Don’t Gas Asia’ campaign started in Tokyo, Manila, Incheon, Mandaluyong, Jakarta, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, Lahore, Karachi, and Dhaka on May 17, 2023.

The campaign was launched in front of the Bangladesh National Museum by EquityBD, YouthNet for Climate Justice, BELA, Brati, CLEAN, Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific, Global Law Thinkers Society, WATERKEEPERS BANGLADESH, and Bangladesh Farmers Association. On this occasion, puppet shows and human tying were held there.

Incidentally, this gathering across Asia is organized and coordinated by Asia Energy Network and Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD).

The event held in Dhaka was presided over by Brati CEO Sharmin Murshid, and Waterkeepers Bangladesh Coordinator Sharif Jamil moderated the event.

Also present at the event and spoke – President of Bangladesh Farmers Federation A.S.M. Badrul Alam, Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific Representative Barish Hasan Chowdhury, Safer Development Foundation Chairman Ibnul Said Rana,

Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council President Aminul Islam Tubbus, Global Law Thinkers Society President Raoman Smita, Youth Net for Climate Justice Coordinator S.Z. Apu, etc.

Asian People’s Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) coordinator and convenor of the Asian Energy Network, Liddy Nakpil, said, “Billions of dollars worth of liquefied natural gas terminals, power plants, and pipeline expansion projects are underway in Asia.”

We don’t need these projects. They will create more problems than solve the climate and energy crises in the region because gas is just as harmful as coal.

Through the “Don’t Gas Asia” campaign, we are sending the message to governments, banks, and corporations to stop expanding gas and other fossil fuels. Convert to 100% renewable energy.’

Rich countries are giving fossil fuels to poor African and Asian countries under the guise of economic development, causing damage that may be impossible to reverse. Today, the journey of this “Don’t Gas Asia” campaign started together in ten Asian countries.

Sharmin Murshid said, “Fossil fuels are accelerating climate change. The government needs to realize that the faster we invest in renewable energy, the faster we can save this country from destruction.”
