The use of polythene in the Super shops of Bangladesh is being banned from October 1, 2024

Prominent environmentalist Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser of the current interim government of Bangladesh, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, (MOEFCC), Bangladesh,

said that no polythene, polythene shopping bags and polypropylene bags can be kept in all super shops of the country from next October.

Eco-friendly jute and cloth bags will be available for sale at all supermarkets as an alternative to polythene bags.

The Environment Advisor spoke at a meeting with stakeholders at her office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday, September 9.

She also said that youth and students will be involved here. The ban on polythene bags from October 1 will be widely publicized in print and electronic media from September 15. It will be published as a public notice in the newspaper.

The environment advisor announced that the textile and jute ministry will meet with all super shops within a week to ensure the supply of jute shopping bags.

The Department of Environment (Bangladesh) and Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) will host a fair for manufacturers of eco-friendly materials and jute bags by September 30.

At the fair, super shop authorities and manufacturers can discuss their demand and supply, said the environmental adviser.

The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of the (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, and was attended by the Additional Secretary of the Ministry, Director General of the Department of Environment (Bangladesh), other ministries and CSD Super Shops Outlet, Wholesale club, Unimart, Chaldal, Agora, Shwapno, Mustafa Mart Bangladesh, The Daily Super shop, Almas Super Shop, Prince Bazar Ltd.,  and representatives of various super shops, including Shapla Super Shop, Environment and Social Development Organization.
