A list of plants for conservation and proper management is prepared: Environ Advisor of Bangladesh

The Bangladesh government has prepared a red list of 1,000 plant species for the conservation and proper management of plant species in the country, said Syeda Rizwana Hasan, advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh.

She said that through this list, we have been able to properly assess the endangered plant species.

The list includes 271 least endangered species, 256 data-deficient species, 395 endangered species, 5 critically endangered species, 127 endangered species, and 263 critical species. In addition, 70 species have been identified as near-threatened and 7 as regionally extinct.

She made this statement at the launch of the ‘Red List of Plants in Bangladesh’ book at her Ministry’s conference room on December 10.

The environmental advisor, Bangladesh, stated that this initiative will prioritize plant conservation and support the government’s biodiversity goals. The ‘Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh’ lists 3,813 plant species that require future assessment.

The list will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and researchers. It will contribute to achieving environmental stability and protecting biodiversity at the national and international levels.

Rizwana stated that the plant Red List will be a crucial resource for conservationists, helping them allocate their efforts and resources effectively.

She mentioned that they developed management strategies in five protected forest areas to lessen the effect of invasive plant species. The study identified 17 invasive plant species in the country, such as Water Hyacinth and Chinese Creeper (Mikania micrantha).

These are causing havoc in the environment and there is a need to take preventive measures. These strategies will include import bans on invasive species, preventing commercialization and implementing effective management systems.

These initiatives are expected to make significant contributions to Bangladesh’s national and international efforts in conserving forests and forest resources.
