Turning plastic waste into valuable graphene

A dream of converting the world’s vast pile of plastic waste into a valuable resource is about to come true. Researchers at Rice University have developed a method to convert various plastic waste into a super material similar to graphene in only a few milliseconds. Graphene is a two-dimensional form of carbon, which is stronger than steel and highly conductive.

The process is called ‘Flash Joule Heating’. In this, plastic waste is rapidly heated to extremely high temperatures (about 3000 Kelvin) using a strong electric current. At this temperature, the plastic polymers break down and turn into pure graphene powder.

This method recycles old plastic and creates a valuable material for industries like electronics, batteries, and composites.

The commercial potential of this innovation is enormous, as it could change the economic model of the recycling industry.

Currently, plastic recycling is often expensive and unprofitable, resulting in most plastics ending up in landfills or the ocean. This technology can transform plastic waste into valuable graphene, significantly reducing plastic pollution.
