Green Maritime: Commercial voyage of hydrogen and ammonia‑powered cargo ships in 2026

About 90% of global trade by volume is transported by ships. Yet this vast shipping industry is responsible for roughly 3% of global carbon emissions because vessels burn highly polluting heavy fuel oil (bunker fuel).

In May 2026, strict environmental rules from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) triggered a new revolution in the shipping sector. For the first time in history, mega cargo ships powered by hydrogen and green ammonia have been commercially launched.

Environmental damage from the shipping industry: Emissions from conventional ships notably sulfur dioxide and black carbon severely pollute the air and sea. The smoke from these vessels is a major factor in the melting of ice in the Arctic and polar regions.

Commercial deployment of new fuels: In 2026, a joint initiative by the Netherlands and Japan produced the world’s first green hydrogen‑powered container ship, which completed its first successful international voyage.

  • Zero emissions: When hydrogen or ammonia is used in fuel cells, combustion produces only water or water vapor instead of smoke, making it fully environmentally friendly.
  • Advantage of green ammonia: Ammonia is easier and cheaper to store than liquid hydrogen, so green ammonia became the most popular alternative fuel for long‑range large ships in 2026.

This green transformation of the shipping industry is a huge leap toward meeting climate targets. The progress in 2026 charts a clear path toward the global goal of fully decarbonizing maritime transport by 2050.
