A program to plant 1,000 palm tree seedlings has started in Rajshahi. This aims to reduce lightning strikes and protect the environment and wildlife.
As part of the one 1,00,000 palm-tree sapling planting programme across the country, the saplings will be planted in various educational institutions (schools, colleges and madrasas), Rajshahi University, RUET and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as part of the joint initiative of environmental organisation Nature & Biodiversity Conservation Forum (NBCF) and CGED: Center for Global Environment and Development.
The young trees will be planted along the Padma River. This includes schools, colleges, and madrasas in Rajshahi, as well as Rajshahi University, RUET, and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The programme was inaugurated by planting palm-tree saplings on the premises of Rajshahi Medical College at 11 am on 29 August 2026. Honorable Land Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu, MP, was present as the chief guest.
The guests invited were Sohel Rana, the Secretary of Rajshahi City Corporation; Professor Dr Mirza Mohammad Wasi Parvez, the Principal of Rajshahi Institute of Health Technology; and Dr Md., the Executive Director of Center for Global Environment and Development. Abdul Wahab, Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum President Professor Dr. BK Dam, and Rajshahi Government Survey Institute Principal Md. Amirul Islam.
Rajshahi Medical College Principal Professor Dr. Khondaker Md. Faisal Alam presided over the event. The event was conducted by Engineer Junaid Ahmed, Chief Coordinator of the One Lakh Palm Tree Planting Programme and Founder and General Secretary of Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum.
The Honourable Minister handed over palm tree saplings to the heads of various educational institutions of Rajshahi at the event.
