Much lack of commitment of Nations toward climate change: UN report

The United Nations has called for more ambitious climate action plans for the world’s major greenhouse gas-emitting nations long before the COP-26 summit in November this year and needs to take action to reach toward that goal.

In its latest report in February, the agency noted that global emissions must be reduced by half a percent (45%) by 2030 to limit global temperatures to an average increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Seventy-five countries and territories have shown very little ambition to contribute to the new or updated national activities defined on the Paris Climate Agreement in their submitted reports by the end of last year, the agency said. Also, the agency says, many countries have not yet submitted their contribution targets.

The report says Britain and the European Union are the only two significant emitters that have been pushing vital targets and need to be reined in now.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the report as “a serious threat to the planet.”
