Climate adaptation activities underway in Varendra and Haor areas: Environment Minister of Bangladesh
Md Shahab Uddin, Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, said,
“The government is implementing an environment-based adaptation system in Varendra and Haor areas of the country to deal with the adverse effects of climate change. ‘’
He said, ‘As a part of this, re-excavation of canals, banks, ponds, and afforestation going on in Hakaluki Haor area of Sylhet division.
Similarly, in the Varendra area of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, digging of ponds and canals and afforestation activities implementing to retain rainwater.
The Environment Minister said these things while delivering the chief guest’s speech at the inauguration ceremony of re-excavating the Madhavachhara canal, including three Beels, and 18 ponds under the ‘
Ecosystem-based-Approaches-to-Adaptation-EbA-in-the in the Drought Prone Barind Tract and Haoar Wetland Area project. The Department of Environment under the MOEFCC is implementing this project.
‘Government officials and local people are training on environment-based adaptation methods to increase capacity.
As part of the adaptation program, environment-friendly alternative employment measures will take for the local people, including cultivation of medicinal plants, fish farming, and various fruits. We will deal with the effects of climate change by involving people of all levels,” the Environment Minister added.
