Freshwater dolphins of Khalishpur: Symbol of environmental crisis

Ganges River dolphins (Platanista gangetica) are often spotted at the confluence of the Rupsha, Bhairab, and Atai rivers in Khalishpur, Khulna. There is a group of about 7-10 dolphins in this area, which is an interesting sight for the locals.

Dolphin life cycle and environmental crisis

Dolphins usually come up to the surface of the water to breathe every 3-5 minutes. They sleep for only 15-20 minutes of the day and night. Even during this time, half of the brain rests. The rest of the body remains active.

The dolphins in Khalishpur are struggling as lower oxygen levels in the rivers force them to surface frequently for air. This is a clear sign of river pollution. In addition, anchoring of large ships and dumping of waste in the river are creating environmental challenges for the dolphins.

Dolphin numbers and conservation initiatives

There are about 636 freshwater dolphins in Bangladesh, spread across various rivers. The number of dolphins in these groups was about 1,352. This year, about 1,500 more kilometers have been counted. We will get the results of the dolphin count soon.

However, the number of dolphins is decreasing due to environmental crises. The Forest Department and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Bangladesh are jointly conducting a dolphin count program. However, there is a lack of effective initiatives to conserve dolphins.

Main cause of dolphin deaths

Studies have shown that 79 percent of dolphin deaths in Bangladesh are due to entanglement in illegal current nets. In addition, river pollution and habitat destruction pose a threat to dolphins. Despite having declared 9 sanctuaries for dolphin conservation in this riverine country, efforts have not been successful.

World Freshwater Dolphin Day and the need for national initiatives

On the occasion of World Freshwater Dolphin Day on October 24, various organizations are conducting awareness-raising activities for dolphin conservation. However, it is necessary to declare dolphins as “national aquatic animals” and establish sanctuaries nationally. In addition, it is important to take effective steps to control river pollution.
