Hundreds of birds died eating poisoned rice
Hundreds of birds died by mixing poison with paddy at Chunarughat in Habiganj, Bangladesh.
The incident took place at Inatabad village in Upazila Chunarughat on October 10, 2021. The forest department (Bangladesh) has started trying to bring bird hunters under the law.
According to the locals, flocks of pigeons and sparrows come to Inatabad village every day in search of food. After eating all day, they left in the afternoon. Nowadays, some people are mixing poison with rice/paddies and scattering them on paddy fields. Birds fly to the paddy fields, eat that poisoning rice, and start moaning. Later the hunters slaughtered them and took them away.
About 100 pigeons and sparrows died on Sunday. Upon receiving the news, Siddhartha Bhowmik, Chunarughat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), went to the spot. Although the hunters fled at that time, he seized 21 birds and paddy mixed with poison.
Mahmud Hossain, Satchhari Range Officer of the Forest Department, said, “I have heard about bird hunting with poison. I will go to the spot and investigate the matter. If those involved get identified, we will take them into custody.”
Chunarughat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Siddhartha Bhowmik said, “Hundreds of birds died of poisoning in Inatabad village. We have recovered a pigeon and 20 sparrows from the spot. We are trying to find the hunters.”
