To protect biodiversity, we need to be nature-centric: Environment Advisor of Bangladesh

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, emphasized the need for countries to collaborate in protecting international rivers, forests, and wetlands.

Environmental and climate justice must be ensured. Countries responsible for climate change and pollution should be brought under compensation. To protect biodiversity, we need to be nature-centric and talk about nature’s rights.

The environmental advisor spoke at the 8th IUCN Regional Conservation Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 11, 2024, focusing on ‘Reimagining Conservation in Asia: A Nature Positive Future.’ IUCN presented the vision and action plan for the next 20 years at the conference.

The environment advisor said that the concept of opposition to development and environment is not correct. This will be proven if the vision presented by IUCN is achieved. She suggested regular updating of the 20-year vision and highlighted the importance of including youth in all plans.

The advisor is leading the delegation of Bangladesh in this conference which is going on from September 11 to 13. Additional Secretary of the MOEFCC, Bangladesh, Iqbal Abdullah Haroon is also in the delegation. In addition to the environment adviser, the representative of the Maldives also spoke.
