The department of environment (Bangladesh) imposing fines for illegal cutting of hills
The Department of Environment (DOE), Bangladesh, charged US$37581.46 against sixteen individuals for constructing various infrastructures on the hill by leveling it. This incident took place in the East Nasirabad area of Bayezid police station, Chattogram district, Bangladesh.
Besides, five individuals charged US$2915.10 to construct a multi-story building in the Krishnachura residential area without any clearance from the DOE.
The fine got imposed after a hearing at the Chattogram office of the Department of Environment (DOE). Mohammad Nurullah Noori, director of the Chattogram metropolitan office of the DOE, confirmed the matter to the Media.
He said the fine imposes following Section- 7 of the Bangladesh Environmental Conservation Act-1995 (amended 2010). They were cutting down the mountains and causing damage to the environment.
The fine was imposed after a hearing at the Department of Environment today. Everyone asked to pay the fine within the next seven days.
Mia Mahmudul Haque, Deputy Director, Metropolitan Office, DOE, Janwar Hossain, a Junior Chemist, and Inspector Sakhawat Hossain, an enforcement team, visited Nagin Hills on September 30, 2021. During the inspection, they get the truth of the hill cutting.
The official of the DOE said, for cutting the Nagin hill, MD. Shafiul Alam, Saifuddin, Mozammel Haque Zafar, Nilufar Begum, and Anwar Pasha got charged US$4197.74, US$2332.08, US$2798.4, US$2332.08, and US$2332.08, respectively. (1.00 BDT ≈ US$0.01166 )
Besides, for the same crime, Gazi Mir Ahmed (US$2332.08), Nurul Abshar (US$1749.06), Emdad Ullah (US$2332.08), Shafiul Alam (US$2098.87), Mohammad Musa (US$2332.08), Firoz Ahmed (US$2332.08), Saidul Alam Ifti (US$2332.08), Zafar Alam (US$1865.66), Fazlul Rahman (US$2332.08), Ahmed Mostafa Fahim (US$2332.08) and Mohammad Shafiq (US$1632.45 ) also charged a significant amount of money.
Mohammad Nurullah Noori, director of the DOE of Chattogram metropolitan office, said Tahmina Afroz Chowdhury had fined US$583.02 for constructing a building in the Krishnachura residential area without environmental clearance. Besides, Ikramul (US$583.02), Borhan Uddin (US$583.0), Taufiqur Rahman (US$583.02), and Mahabubul Alam (US$583.02 also was fined for the same offense.
